YOU will have noted from the research you did into the meanings of artefact and archaeology that any object could be an archaeological source. In the case of the Kasta Hill tomb, the team of archaeologists led by Katerina Peristeri in 2014 found themselves surrounded by a rich variety of artefacts, monuments, sculptures and mosaics. An electrical tomographic study at the time indicated that further tombs may lay beneath the hill.
When we examine archaeological sources it is important that we ask ourselves a range of questions to steer our inquiry. Often the answers we may suppose can lead to further questions and answers, and thus a greater depth of investigation.
* Read Bradley p. 8.
* Note the questions archaeologists ask about sources, using each as a sub-heading. Summarise the important points about each question. You needn't copy the examples offered unless you find them particularly interesting or helpful.
ACTIVITY
It will be good practice to now return our focus to the Lion of Amphipolis and ask ourselves these questions. Clicking the image below will bring you to some useful reading about the monument.
