THE word heritage comes from the Old French, and is closely linked with other similar words such as inheritance, heir and heirloom. It refers to what may be inherited. In the study of heritage, ideas about inheritance are magnified because we generally think about how generations of the future will inherit the present and the past, our heritage. One only needs to realise that the United Nations has a list of World Heritage sites to understand the global importance of preserving the record of earthly existence.
