ONCE the site has been located, the surveyor helps to form the site plan and to advise where trial trenches should be dug. There are a variety of excavating techniques that may be employed. At Kasta Hill, because of the nature of the find - a tomb in a burial mound - the excavators are tunnelling and supporting the ceiling with scaffolding as they go. This is a clearing excavation, designed to allow the archaeologists the opportunity to learn about the function of the site. Other types of excavation, such as the more common grid excavation, may have to be used to excavate more completely, especially in the fourth chamber.
